Getting Rid Of Slugs And Snails

Slugs and nails are awful pests and they can do a great deal of damage to your garden if you don’t prevent them ahead of time. Fortunately there are plenty of ways that you can do this and lots of methods that don’t take much time or work on your part. Read on for some helpful advice for getting rid of slugs and snails in your garden.

The first and most basic of ways of getting rid of slugs or snails is simply by pulling them off of the leaves of any of your plants and out of your garden and getting rid of them somehow - you can simply toss them in a dumpster if you want or put them in some salty water. You can also set out little traps for them by leaving upturned pots or cans out in the garden that the snails will crawl into to get away from the heat and then in the mornings you can just throw these away - which saves you the time of having to go through the whole garden to try and find them all.

Another very clever way of dealing with slugs and snails is to leave a mixture of honey and yeast in an open dish out in your yard (level with the ground so the snails can get in) and they will then fall in and drown themselves. Snails are very attracted to this mixture and they also love beer, grape juice, a variety of other sugary liquids so just experiment until you find what works best for you.

Copper is also quite effective for getting rid of snails and slugs because they cannot stand it and it gives them a bit of a shock when they touch it. This only creates a barrier though so if you already have snails in the garden it won’t get rid of your problem - it will just keep the snails in the garden where they already are. This however is great for preventing snails from coming into new flower beds or vegetable gardens where you haven’t had a problem yet with them.

You can also surround your garden with other materials to deter slugs such as sandpaper, salt, wood shavings, egg shells and other rough materials that slugs wont want to cross. This won’t get rid of any slugs or kill them but it will slow them down in feasting on your plants. If you do put salt out to kill the slugs then make sure you put it far enough from your garden that you wont ruin our soil (you should never put salt in your garden) but close enough that it will be effective. Snail bait is also very effective in this manner and is safe for you plants and other pets to be around as well. You simply sprinkle the bait and then the snails or slugs eat it and it goes through their system and causes them to die a few days later.

There are plenty of ways to keep snails and slugs from getting into your garden. Be creative and do some experimenting to see what works best for you!
